Palais de la Mutualité, Paris, France
Concert before a live audience filmed tonight and broadcast July 26th on ORTF Channel 1 programme 'Discorama' (Denise Glaser - 10:00 - 10:20 pm).
The programme was originally set to air on July 7th but The Kinks' segment was hastily removed two days prior.
The show's directors were horrified upon previewing the band's live act, which was deemed too wild for primetime TV.
However, public outcry from the programme's young viewers resulted in The Kinks' segment being reinstated on a later show.
A brief clip of the band performing 'Louie Louie' will later be exhumed and used in a 1993 French TV special about the band, indicating that the broadcast still exists (...)

5. Babe I'm Gonna Leave You (07:14) ,
6. Pat's Delight ( 12:15)

note by jameskg:
This is as close as you'll ever get the high speed reel master source. AJD owns the original PCM transfer from those reels and the reels have since been destroyed by fire. This originally came from Bill Graham's vault. The original PCM is the now definitive source, but was not widely circulating until now. This is the most complete tape circulated in this quality to date.

PCM was used before DAT machines were invented and were the first means of digital recording. An A/D signal converter was used to to encode analog audio from tape reels to (Sony recommended) BETAMAX tapes in a standard BETA machine. A PCM encoder, coupled to a VCR, enables you to record digital audio as if it was an ordinary video signal. The device also extracts the digital audio message from the video signal, the other way round, for playback.

This PCM was likely made with either the PCM-1 (1977) or the PCM-F1 (1981).
The first PCM encoder (SONY PCM-1) can be seen here: CLICK
This PCM was likely made with either the PCM-1 (1977) or the PCM-F1 (1981) , which can be seen here: CLICK

What you are receiving is a direct digital transfer done by the owner of the PCM recording, AJD, a professional audio guru. The PCM machine used for the transfer is a SONY PCM-601ESD, originally sold in 1984-1985. The PCM-601ESD had the important advantages of S/PDIF digital I/O and adjustable tracking and VCR head-matching circuits and was the best digital storage technology available at the time.

These units are pretty hard to come by these days.

I took his transfer and mastered it for release, then encoded to FLAC8. Notice it it not a "remaster" since was never actually mastered, just transferred from old media to new as the technology progressed.

For those who would ask:
This is better quality than "Blues Anytime" from EVSD. The tape is more complete and the audio quality is at least a generation cleaner, if not two. The stereo separation is MUCH better on this transfer than whatever EVSD used. The first few notes on BIGLY have obviously been spliced in by EVSD from a distorted source (probably not even the same date) and do not exist on the master PCM.

This is more complete and better quality than the original "Dancing Avocado". When I put that one out, the source I was given had been through more DAT and CDR gens.

Extended Lineage info:

2 neumann mics (on stage), master reel @ 15ips, PCM transfer, DAT transfer

Digitally transferred from original PCM to DAT by AJD
Kubola-Sosna Reference cables, (Sony PCM 601ESD > Sony DAT 2000ES)

DAT transfer and mastering to FLAC by JAMESKG
- Tape speed-up during 4.WS/BMS corrected by JAMESKG @ 06:18 - 06:25 on mastered CD only.
- The 2nd CD is RAW PCM transfer, completely untouched.
- ZERO compression or limiting used in mastering.

Art by Small Fish, Release date: 2005.07.24, "Sunday Night Special"

This show had some PA problems in a few places (Jones' bass rig, mainly) and the PA had a slight buzz all night (only noticeable between songs or very quiet passages). But hey, that's how it went down that night, so it's just like being there - except - Plant's mic seems distant - which adds credibility to the 2 neumanns on stage thing. They'd have picked up the drums and amps and Roberts voice would have been on the house PA, which was probably just forward of the mics (or in line). I kind of like it this way - as I can really hear the band!

"Sunlight Soldiers at the West End"

This is what brucebase has to say about the show:
24/04/70 - MONMOUTH COLLEGE, LONG BRANCH, NJ

FUNKY BROADWAY (2:20) / GUILTY (7:58) / GOIN' BACK TO GEORGIA (5:31) / THE WIND AND THE RAIN (19:19) / RESURRECTION (13:28) / GARDEN STATE PARKWAY BLUES (29:40)

ONE show, with STEEL MILL the sole act on the bill. This was a replacement concert for a cancellation of the musical “Hair”. The above-mentioned setlist is taken from a circulating soundboard of very good to excellent quality, although end-user quality tends to vary widely due to the fact the material has been in circulation for over 20 years and some circulating copies are many generations downstream. This 6-song, 78-minute segment of audio, long referred to in collector circles as “the West End gig”, would have to rank as the most misidentified, misdated and cannibalized of all Springsteen recordings. To make matters even messier though, the show’s epic 30-minute finale, “Garden State Parkway Blues”, is sometimes edited into separate segments and assigned fictitious titles such as “Mountain Child”, “I Got A Woman” or “Sunlight Soldiers”. Many LP and CD bootlegs (such as “TORN AND FRAYED”, “THE BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN STORY VOL 3” and “DEEP DOWN IN THE VAULTS”) contain one, two or several of these tracks – assigned to a wide variety of incorrect dates/venues. However “SUNLIGHT SOLDIERS AT THE WEST END” (Rattlesnake) includes the complete audio and merely messes up the correct date/venue.

This soundboard tape is very deceptive in that drummer Vinnie Lopez’s voice microphone is abnormally dominant in the mix, so much so that it sounds like a co-lead singer (i.e., Robbin Thompson) is interacting with Springsteen throughout the show. However under an extremely close comparison it can be determined that the “co-lead” vocalist is actually drummer and background vocalist Lopez, with his microphone turned way up in the audio mix. Robbin Thompson’s voice is definitely not present.

There are three critical clues during the performance that, when combined, powerfully point to the true location and date of this show. Firstly, Bruce’s dedication to the “West End Fire Department” - this signifies a Long Branch or close proximity location. Secondly, the distinct sound of wooden side bleachers being stomped during the final song – this signifies it’s indoors and it’s a gymnasium (not a theatre or concert hall). Thirdly, Bruce recites the opening line of James Taylor’s song “Sweet Baby James” during “Garden State Parkway Blues” – that places the show no sooner than late March, 1970. Consequently this audio can, to a high degree of probability, be identified as coming from this April 24, 1970 show.

It's only 16minutes but it's fire.

"Straight from Top Of The Pops, we have New Order! On my left, I have Peter Hook. On my right, I have Gillian Gilbert. Behind me, I have Ian Curtis."

Listen at about 0:19 of Blue Monday for the BBC 'bong'. This was punched into the broadcast by a hapless engineer who missed their cue. Don't settle for imitation rebroadcasts encoded via inferior lossy algorithms!

Don't buy what Bernard's saying about his "Ceremony guitar" being a 1959 Les Paul. He's talking shite, as usual. You'll get to hear a special bonus as I've included the Kilkenny radio interview taped afterwards, and hear Stephen fend off the interviewer's usual barrage, a prototype of what was to come with the Other Two drawing the short straws and doing the press rounds.

This recording was done more upfront stage than the Amsterdam show of 04/23. Therefor it has a certain degree of chatter/audience noise, but nethertheless a fucking bloody great tape!

Sweetwater
Mill Valley, California, USA

This is longer (none of the other circulating versions contain the opening Nick Lowe solo set and the video is also missing a lot of Elvis Costello's solo set). This audio is also at the correct pitch, while the previous one is more than a semitone too fast and much thinner-sounding.

Village Music was a little record store in Mill Valley California and its owner, John Goddard, threw a lot of great anniversary parties at the tiny nearby club, The Sweetwater. This show is full of cool one-of-a-kind performances. This is the soundboard audio from a very decent quality 2 camera shoot. This is likely to be an upgrade over everything that has previously circulated from this show. The first half is sourced from the VHS Hi-Fi "dubbing master" audio and the second half is from a Dat master. The Dat tape of the first half of the show is missing but the audio quality is similar on the VHS Hi-Fi. I attempted to list the lineups for each song after watching the video closely but since there are so many changes there may be some minor errors. I'll put quite a few samples in the comments and they will be able to be referred to for the video post also. (The upgraded video DVDs will be posted next.)

Lineage: Two TDK HD-XPro T-120 VHS tapes. There are a few video breaks for approximately 20 seconds each which were replaced with color bars. The audio is seamless with the first half from the VHS Hi-Fi soundtrack and the rest from a Dat master. A few seconds have been spliced in from an alternate downloaded soundboard source. Since all the breaks start between songs, very little of the music is missing as the video masters change tapes.

Transfer: Sony WV-DR7 > Sony DVMC-DA2 Media Converter (DV Hardware Codec Converter) > Final Cut Pro > Pro Tools (minor "nip and tuck" edits and normalization. No noise reduction or equalization).

Note: Audio versions of this show have also circulated as being from the 29th, but that is incorrect (there was a Grateful Dead show on the 29th).

Village Music was a little record store in Mill Valley California and its owner, John Goddard, threw a lot of great anniversary parties at the tiny nearby club, The Sweetwater. This show is full of cool one-of-a-kind performances. It's the complete show from VHS tapes that are labeled "dubbing masters" and is an upgrade over what has previously circulated of this show. The stage was well lit for the video and the cameras are mostly steady. There was a lot of flash photography that washes out frames here and there, but it's mostly problem free and quite enjoyable. There was some silent backstage footage at the end of the first VHS tape that is included at the end of the second DVD. I attempted to list the lineups for each song but since there are so many changes there might be minor errors. I could've fit this on one DVD9 disc but not at maximum video quality so it's only being shared in this two single-layer DVD set.

Finally, from a blog I found online about this show:
"Elvis: Certainly a candidate for the world's greatest record store is Village Music, in Mill Valley. Every year John Goddard has a party for his friends and customers, and he always has a really good bill of people. So on the twenty-first anniversary, I did a show with Nick Lowe, and he invited James Burton and Jerry Scheff, who'd played with me on the road. I did my little set, Nick did his set and then it was a free-for-all; Charles Brown did a piece, and people were getting summoned to the stage. I was standing in the corridor when I suddenly heard, "Jerry Garcia to the stage!" And, emboldened by several margaritas, I decided to join him.

Jerry: Not only that, but it was one of those situations where I had the choice of playing either Elvis' guitar, which is low and it's stiff, and the strings are quite wide as well, and all this confusing script, or of playing Burton's guitar, which is strung with spider webs. I mean it's the absolutely lightest you can string a guitar and still get a sound out of it. I'd take Burton's and play a note on it and it goes "spack." So I opted to play Elvis' guitar as the lesser of two evils. [*laughter*] And I vowed I would never go to another one of those shows without my own.

Elvis: It was a whole Three Stooges routine -- "Here, you take my guitar," "No, I'll take your guitar." I think I had Burton's old Telecaster for half a song, and James had my old Martin acoustic which wasn't cranked up so he couldn't solo--and Jerry's struggling with my guitar. But once everybody got settled we managed to struggle through a couple of Hank Williams songs. Like any sort of jam thing it inevitably came to degenerate towards lots of blues. But we managed a few songs with changes.

Jerry: A pretty high level of jam-sessionry really, considering what it was. Really fun. And Elvis' solo set was phenomenal, I thought. That's one of those things that I can't do at all, just playing the guitar and singing. You're so solid with that, you don't miss a band. I always feel like I'm missing a band."

Additional comments:
DVD-Video containing the first concert of Dire Straits in Paris 1.992. Great concert, good atmosphere. This is a multi-cam version taken from two different camera sources. Really nice, allthough one cam has worse picture quality than the other. Looking closely at parts of "Calling Elvis" and "Money for nothing", you can see that this was the show that was filmed for the French documentary "24 Heures ". Both video and sound quality are good. Very nice to have "Iron hand" on this recording as this song was rarely played on this tour (Poupystar).
